Fry Art Gallery
|
The Fry Art Gallery has often been referred to as "the gallery of the garden" and was built in 1856 to house the expanding collection of artworks assembled by Francis Gibson. When he died in 1859 the building passed by descent to the Fry Family who now lease it to The Fry Art Gallery Society.
Today the collection includes works mainly by north west Essex artists, principally those such as Edward Bawden and Eric Ravilious who lived together in the artistic community at Great Bardfield in the mid twentieth century. The Gallery also houses works by Francis Gibson's grandson, Lewis George Fry (1860-1933), who was a landscape painter of some note and who designed two mural panels for the summerhouse in Bridge End Gardens.
