The Maze, as you see it today, was laid out in 1986. Prior to that, the original Maze had fallen into such a state of dilapidation that the whole area had to be cut down and a start made from scratch. It was an over grown spinney full of other invasive tree species such as sycamores.
The design is very similar to the original maze that was built in about 1840 that appears on the first 1877 Ordnance Survey Map. The perhiperal paths are based on the 1877 map. All paths are accessible for people with disabilities. The Maze is approached from the main lawn area through impressive wrought iron gates, which have been repaired.

The main entrance path leads to a curious area near the blue gate to the Walled Garden. Here there is a tiled and slate surface where an original statue used to exist in the 1840's. The tiles picture a mythical sea creature holding a trident supported on two entwined fish tails. An archeological excavation in 2004 tried to establish if this area was enclosed by a building. However no such evidence was found. This small, but interesting site, remains a mystery. We have decided to restore what remains and not make fanciful interpretations of what might have been. Thus our successors can undertake further investigations if the opportunity arises in certainty that we have not misinterpreted history.

Try and walk to the centre of the Maze where the impressive layout can be viewed from the recently erected viewing platform. We intend to rebuild a wooden shelter shown on the old Ordnance Survey Map and provide and interpretative board for your enjoyment. Whilst in the town look out for the Turf Maze on the Common which is far older and of a different type, but equally impressive.
