Like most of the garden this area had totally deteriorated and when restoration started in 2003 it was nothing more than an overgrown spinney. The term wilderness in Victorian times had entirely different meaning and in the late 18th and early 19th centuries would have been an informal woodland area of mixed species. Plants imported from North America often formed the landscape structure of such areas.

The Christmas Roses provide incredible splashes of colour in the year when little else is in bloom. A metal arch-way over which yew trees will grow will eventually provide a tunnel providing a formal walk to the grotto with its Coadestone figure and flight of steps leading on to the Summerhouse lawn beyond.
