Business Rates (National Non-Domestic Rates)

There are over 2,600 business properties in Uttlesford. The business rates for each property is determined by its rateable value, which is fixed by the Valuation Office. All non-domestic property is re-valued every five years. From 1st April 2005, the rateable value represents the open market rental value as at 1st April 2003.

The non-domestic rates collected by billing authorities such as Uttlesford are paid into a central pool and then redistributed to County Councils, District Councils, Police and Fire Authorities in the form of a Grant. The money is used to pay for the services provided by the Council's and the other Authorities.
