The scientific evidence is now overwhelmingly clear that the earth's climate is changing as a result of man-made greenhouse gas emissions, principally carbon dioxide produced from burning fossil fuels for energy. Every individual in the UK is highly reliant on energy in their daily lives, either directly from the lights, appliances and heating we use in our homes, or indirectly, like the fuel used to deliver food to the supermarkets we shop at.
Climate change is a global problem, but it will have local impacts, even here in Uttlesford. Scientists predict East Anglia will experience water shortages, stronger winter storms and summer heat waves in the coming years. But impacts will become worse if greenhouse gas emissions are not reduced.
So for the sake of our all our futures, we all must reduce our energy consumption and switch to cleaner forms of energy. The Council is committed to this principle, which is why we have signed the Nottingham Declaration on Climate Change, which commits us to tackling the causes and effects of climate change in Uttlesford, including achieving a significant reduction in carbon dioxide emissions from our operations. We have also committed to working together with our neighbour Braintree District Council to achieve this, through our joint protocol on climate change.
