The Council collects Council Tax from some 30,000 dwellings. There is one bill per dwelling, whether it is a house, bungalow, flat, maisonette, mobile home or houseboat, and whether it is owned or rented. Each dwelling is allocated to one of eight valuation bands according to its open market value as at 1st April 1991. The valuation bands can be found on the Council Tax bill.
The Council Tax is collected by Uttlesford District Council who are also responsible for collecting Business Rates. Most dwellings are subject to the council tax. There is one bill per dwelling, whether it is a house, bungalow, flat, maisonette, mobile home or houseboat, and whether it is owned or rented.
This year the District Council must collect about £26 million from Council Tax payers. From each pound collected 78p will go to the Essex County Council to pay for services such as social services, care in the community, schools, libraries, highways and fire services.
Another 8p in the pound goes to the Essex Police Authority. The remaining 14p in the pound collected from taxpayers will stay in the district to pay for services provided by Uttlesford and the town or parish council. The services provided include refuse collection, concessionary travel, day centres for the elderly, care for the environment, health and safety, planning, leisure and recreation.
