Sustainable Uttlesford (Local Agenda 21)

Sustainable Uttlesford (Local Agenda 21)

What is Sustainable Uttlesford (Local Agenda 21)?

As a result of the United Nations Earth Summit held in Rio de Janeiro in 1992, local authorities worldwide were mandated to set up groups of stakeholders to work to create sustainable communities and cities while protecting global common goods such as the atmosphere, the climate and biological diversity.

This is the Agenda for the 21st Century (hence Local Agenda 21) and it supports the principles of Sustainable Development, which can be summed up as: ‘Development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.’

As well as the information on this section of the Council's website, you can find out more about Sustainable Uttlesford by visiting its dedicated website at www.uttlesford.org.uk.

One of the most recent additions to Sustainable Uttlesford's website is a concise guide and timetables for buses operating around Saffron Walden. You can find out more by visiting the site, or simply download the timetable by clicking here.

How is Sustainable Uttlesford organised?

There are three groups which work on different aspects of sustainable development:

1. Farming, Wildlife and Countryside. This group is concerned with the impact of farming practices, transport and the built environment on biodiversity.

2. Transport. This group is concerned with promoting sustainable living through public transport, walking and cycling and reducing CO2 emissions from transport movements. The group recently helped to create the Saffron Walden Cycle Campaign.

3. Energy, Waste and Pollution. This group is concerned with the impact of our resource use on local and global environment. It also is concerned with policies to reduce the impact of the built environment . The group recently set up the Sustainable Homes Network.

Each group is facilitated by an appropriate Uttlesford District Council Officer, and the Chairs and Facilitators of each group constitute the Co-ordinating Committee, with an overall chairman.
