Community Safety

Community Safety

Uttlesford District Council is a member of the district-wide Community Safety Partnership (CSP). This page contains information about the partnership, divided into the following sections:

You can access other pages using the menu on the left.

The council has a community safety officer, an anti-social behaviour officer and a community development officer (alcohol and drugs) who contribute to the work of the CSP.

The CSP comprises statutory, private and voluntary organisations working in partnership to tackle crime and disorder.

The introduction of the Crime and Disorder Act 1998 brought a wide range of partner organisations together and incorporates work in areas including drugs and alcohol misuse and road safety.

The CSP's approach to tackling crime and disorder is based on the understanding that we have a low level of crime in the district. The agencies involved have come together with a determination to address the causes as well as the symptoms of criminal behaviour. Therefore, the main focus of the CSP is on prevention.

Our Situation

Essex is one of the safest regions in Britain and Uttlesford is the safest district in Essex. Moreover, the collective effort of the CSP has led to an even greater reduction in the rate of crime in the district. The graph below (source: British Crime Survey) illustrates the low level of crime in Uttlesford compared to the average in Essex. In Uttlesford, as the figures show, we have 22.7 crimes per 1000 residents.

Essex Police

Essex Police was the first force in the country to sign up to the Policing Pledge which sets out clear priorities for all forces, and shapes the way the police will deal with issues and concerns.

It also informs the public of the standard of service they should expect from their local neighbourhood policing teams. This includes attending all reported crimes, a move Essex Police has already introduced.
