Research Enquiries

We are pleased to receive research enquiries relating to the collections. The Museum has a remarkably rich and varied range of collections, including many items in store. To see objects and documents, you will need to book in advance so that we can prepare the relevant objects and make space for you to work.

Object identifications

Bring in your local 'finds'! We may be able to help you identify them. If you have an object which you would like identifying, you can bring it into the Museum and leave it here for about two - four weeks while we examine and research it. You will be given a receipt for your objects. This is a free service. The Museum is unable to give valuations.

For archaeological finds, we can also put you in touch with the Finds Liaison Officer for Essex for reporting potential treasure finds (as required by the Treasure Act) or for voluntary recording of other finds under the Portable Antiquities Scheme.

Conservation

The Conservation Officer can provide advice on cleaning and caring for precious items.

Evening visits and talks

For groups such as WIs and local societies, we can arrange evening visits to the Museum or provide a talk at your own venue in Uttlesford. The charge for evening visits and talks is £2.50 per head with a minimum charge of £40. Subject to availability of staff.

Receptions and promotions for businesses

Looking for a special venue for your business reception or private function? The Museum’s public galleries can be hired outside public opening hours for private and business functions. Events we have hosted include business launches and Sunday morning christening parties!
