Be prepared…for scouts at Bridge End Garden

Many hands will make light work at Bridge End Garden in Saffron Walden - 350 Scouts are set to visit the Uttlesford District Council managed project.

To mark 2007, the centenary year of Scouting, 40,000 Scouts from almost 200 different countries will be coming to the UK for the 21st World Scout Jamboree being staged at Hylands Park, Chelmsford. As part of the Jamboree ‘Starburst’ programme participants will spend one day undertaking environmental and community service.

Bridge End Garden, managed by Uttlesford District Council, will be hosting one coach-load of Jamboree scouts for eight days at the end of this month or early next. The 14 to 18 year old scouts and guides will arrive at 10.30am each day. Directed by UDC Head Gardener Mark Ropkins and his assistant, Dan Walker, the young people will undertake various tasks from edging paths, weeding lawns and shrub beds, to planting, moving soil conditioner and doing a general tidying-up.

Mark Ropkins said: “The difference that can be made with input from local schoolchildren will be complemented in a big way by the arrival of the Scouts. As well as working in the garden, they will be doing some litter picking in the surrounding area so other sites including Borough Meadow will benefit too.”

Restoration Manager John Bosworth will be conjuring up some tasty morsels for the young people on their visits.

Local scouts will also be involved, taking small groups of the visitors on a walking trail around the town.

The scene is set for Bridge End Garden to spread its magic – this time far and wide beyond the district, sowing seeds to influence the lives of young people from around the world.
