COUNCILLOR KEITH CLARKE

It is with great regret that Uttlesford District Council announces the sad death of Cllr Keith Clarke, who suddenly passed away on Friday 22 April 2005.

Keith Clarke was elected to serve on Uttlesford District Council at the last District elections in May 2003.

Keith represented the Great Dunmow South Ward for the Liberal Democrats and was an active member of the Council.  He was appointed Vice Chairman of the Development Control Committee in May 2004 and Chairman of the influential Strategic Development Advisory Group, which was established in October 2004.

Leader of the Council, Cllr Alan Dean, said:

“I was shocked and saddened to hear on Saturday about Keith’s death.  In the two years that Keith has been a member of Uttlesford he has certainly made his mark and had much more to offer.   He had a deep interest in the planning system and was helping carve out a future vision for Uttlesford.

“The realisation that Keith will not be with us to see this work through to fruition is a tragedy.  Keith was a passionate and caring man who had a lot to offer the council.  My heart goes out to his family at this very sad time.

Cllr Frank Silver, who also represented Great Dunmow South Ward with Keith, said:

“His vast knowledge of planning matters due to his experience as a planner, quickly made him stand out, plus his ability to inform us in great depth on many subjects.

Cllr Elizabeth Godwin, Chairman of the Council, added:

“This is a tragedy for his family.  Keith was a flamboyant and controversial character, well known, well liked and held in high esteem by everyone.  Keith contributed hugely to the Council in the two years since his election.  It is a tribute to his personality and character that he was able to earn such respect and hold the positions he did in such a short time.  He will be very much missed.

The Council flag flew at half mast today and the assembled Council will mark Cllr Clarke’s death at their meeting on 26 April.  The Council flag will also fly at half mast on the day of the funeral.
