Increasing the amount of recycling is important, but it's not the only thing local people can do:
Reduce
Look for products with less packaging – things like loose fruit and vegetables. Shops and markets selling local produce mean less packaging, transport costs, pollution and waste. Buy products that are robust and long-lasting – for example rechargeable batteries or long life light bulbs. Printing or copying on both sides halves the amount of paper used at home or at the office.
Reuse
Take carrier bags back to the supermarket and use them again. Donate used clothes, and books to charity shops or recycling banks. Local car boot sales are a good place to buy or sell used products. Home composting is great for the garden and a good way of reducing the amount of waste generated.
