Great news for history lovers, visitors to Saffron Walden and all those who just want to find out a bit more about the town. Saffron Walden has a new town trail which highlights ten important and attractive parts of the town including The Old Sun Inn, Bridge End Garden and the parish church of St. Mary the Virgin.
The town trail, which has been organized by the Saffron Walden Initiative and funded by a grant of £21,282 from the Heritage Lottery Fund, was launched on 4th November.
The trail is marked with plaques set at ground level and accompanied by a fully illustrated map and leaflet will be available free of charge from Saffron Walden Tourist Information Centre, Library and Museum. A pdf version of the trail is also available by using the link at the bottom of this page.
As well as the pavement-mounted plaques, which have been designed by local architect, John Ready, large coloured maps will also be going up in the three main car parks in town. For those who want buy a souvenir guide of the town, Gordon Ridgewell, the well-known local photographer, has contributed a number of great pictures to a full-colour 24 page photographic booklet which will be shortly be available from the Tourist Information Centre in Saffron Walden.
Those taking part in planning the trail over the past 18 months have included the Saffron Walden Initiative, Market Towns Project Officer, UDC Tourism Officer, Blue Badge Guides, Saffron Walden Town Council, Uttlesford Access Group, Saffron Walden Library, Fry Art Gallery and Saffron Walden Museum. The photographs are by Gordon Ridgewell, text by Sarah Kirkpatrick and drawings by Megan Ridgewell. The design of the large map is by Tanner Design.
