Citizens Panel

Uttlesford District Council wants to listen to the views of its residents on the services and issues that affect them in their daily life. The council has recruited from the residents of Uttlesford, members for a citizens panel to give local people the opportunity to have their say on a wide range of issues. Feedback from the panel helps the council to develop new initiatives and improve the way it runs services.

The panel was recruited from across the district, by a professional market research company, working on behalf of the council. All information provided at any time by members of the panel is treated in the strictest confidence and panel members are not be identified in the results, as all the findings are reported anonymously.

Frequently asked questions about the Citizens Panel:

Periodically, the panel membership is reviewed in order to match , as closely as possible, the proportionate diversity of age groups, disabilities and ethnicity of the population living in Uttlesford. The panel also endeavours to be broadly representative of both the district's working and retired population. Residents who are invited to join the panel may wish to consider the answers to the following frequently asked questions:

What is a citizens panel?

  • A citizens panel is a database of residents who the council can call on when carrying out consultation exercises.
  • The panel is representative of the people of Uttlesford and is made up of about 500 residents of different ages and backgrounds.
  • It is a chance for residents to have their say about district council services, plans and policies

What do I have to do?

  • Panel members are sent out questionnaires to complete
  • The questions will be about local public services but will sometimes include other services provided by partner agencies, for example, the health service or the police
  • Panel members may, from time to time, be invited to take part in group discussions or workshops, but this would be optional

How much of my time will it take?

  • Panel members fill in about three or four questionnaires a year
  • Each questionnaire takes about 20 minutes to complete - in total less than a couple of hours of your time in a whole year

Why is it important?

  • It is an opportunity for you to have some influence over the decisions made by the council
  • We need the views of different ages and communities so that we can improve services for everyone

What happens to the results?

  • The survey findings tell us what you think about services. These findings are used to help inform decisions the council makes about services
  • The information also helps us to decide how to develop new initiatives and improve the way services are run
  • Panel members will receive newsletters informing them of the results and how these are being used by the council
