Grants and assistance for householders

There are a number of initiatives and grants available to help householders through the colder months.

Keeping your home warm

By insulating your home you could save up to £500 per year on your heating bill. Uninsulated cavity walls lose approx. 35% of the heat, by insulating the walls you could save up to £250 per year, cavity wall insulation also keeps your home cooler in the summer.

Similarly 25% of heat is lost through an uninsulated roof, by installing 270mm of loft insulation savings of £265 could be made every year.

Heating oil

If you heat your home by oil, you are likely to make significant savings by joining an Oil Club.  By placing your order with other residents, you are buying in bulk and therefore savings are made with the delivery costs.

Energy efficiency in listed buildings

Listed and other historic or traditional buildings often present unique challenges when it comes to improving energy efficiency. The Council has produced a simple guide to the measures usually possible, and if or when listed building consent will be required to do them. There are also links to further information.

Private landlords/tenants

The Landlords' Energy Saving Allowance (LESA) means landlords can make up to a £1,500 per building deduction on the tax on their profits equivalent to the value of energy-saving measures implemented in their properties. This includes solid wall insulation and draught-proofing.
