Trading Standards

Trading standards can advise on goods and services.

Trading Standards is responsible for ensuring that both businesses and consumers understand their legal rights and responsibilities in relation to legislation that falls within our remit. Trading Standards operate under policies and procedures that outline how we work.

Trading Standards operates the Buy With Confidence scheme, which enables consumers to identify approved traders who readily demonstrate commitment to high working standards, high levels of customer care and a fair trading policy to all customers. The scheme is closely monitored to ensure that approved traders maintain high service standards.

Advice for consumers

Citizens Advice can handle initial enquiries about consumer advice issues such as faulty goods or services.

The Citizens Advice can tell you all you need to know about your rights as a consumer and how to deal with consumer problems.

Citizens Advice also has an online complaints form

Business advice

The Trading Standards Team provides basic guidance to businesses to help them comply with Trading Standards legislation. If you are a consumer and have a complaint about goods or services which you have purchased you should report the problem to the Citizens Advice Consumer Service.

The Citizens Advice Consumer Service also handles initial telephone enquiries, on behalf of Essex Trading Standards, for business advice on products you sell or manufacture in Uttlesford. For more information, call the Trading Standards Business Advice Line on 0845 603 7626.
