Private Hire Operators

If you intend to run your own company and operate private hire vehicles then you would require an operator's licence. To enable you to do this you must have a base or office which is located within the Uttlesford district. Some operators who only use one vehicle do so from their home address, however before this venture is undertaken you should consult with the planning department at these offices.

The licence is valid for five years and has no restrictions on the number of vehicles that you intend to operate. It is recommended that when you decide on a company name or logo you seek advice from the licensing team to prevent using a name that is already in use.

Operators are required to keep a record of every journey that a vehicle undertakes and make that available for inspection at any reasonable time by the police or an authorised officer.

Details of the records which need to be kept can be found in the "Private Hire Operator Conditions" download in the Related Documents box on the right of this page.

If you are not planning to become a driver, then a standard DBS (Disclosure & Barring) check will be required.
