New chairman appointed at Uttlesford

Councillor Geoffrey Sell has been appointed chairman of Uttlesford District Council for 2017-18.

Cllr Sell - Chairman

Cllr Sell, who represents the Stansted North ward, was sworn in at the annual meeting on Tuesday 16 May, taking over the chains of office from Cllr John Davey, who served as chairman in 2016-17.

Speaking about his new role, Cllr Sell said: "I have lived in Uttlesford most of my life and I am proud and honoured to become chairman of this council. I am looking forward to meeting residents of the district and representing Uttlesford further afield in the county."

Cllr Sell has chosen Support 4 Sight and the Essex Wildlife Trust as his good causes for the year.

Support 4 Sight, which is based in Saffron Walden, supports visually impaired people and their families in Essex. It also works to prevent avoidable sight loss and raise awareness of the reality of living with sight difficulties.

The Essex Wildlife Trust is a conservation charity that manages and protects over 8,400 acres of land, 87 nature reserves, two nature parks and 11 visitor centres. It runs two nature reserves in Uttlesford - at Aubrey Buxton just north of Stansted, and West Wood between Thaxted and Great Sampford.

"These two organisations do great work and I would like to raise the profile of both during my year in office," said Cllr Sell.

Before standing down, Cllr Davey, member for Great Dunmow North, said he was proud to have served the district as chairman. He attended over 70 civic events, and raised over £7,000 for the Essex Air Ambulance and Uttlesford Community Travel.

Cllr Lesley Wells, who represents the Broad Oak & the Hallingburys ward, is the council's vice-chairman for 2017-18.
