The former chairman of Uttlesford District Council, Cllr John Davey, has handed over the proceeds from his year in office to his two chosen charities.

Ian Shaw and Malcom Burrell from Uttlesford Community Travel, and Roger Smith representing the Essex Air Ambulance, visited Cllr Davey at the council's London Road offices to discuss his year of fundraising and public appearances. Among other occasions, Cllr Davey was invited to events including the Thaxted Festival, High Sheriff's Garden Party and the bi-annual Community Achievement Awards. He also presented medals to the district's 90-year-olds at royal-themed tea parties during the Queen's 90th Birthday year, laid a wreath on the war memorial in Saffron Walden, and raised flags at the council offices in support of the Armed Forces, Merchant Navy and the Commonwealth.

In total Cllr Davey attended more than 60 civic occasions and hosted four fundraising events of his own - a garden party at the Gardens of Easton Lodge, a quiz night, a Christmas Carol Service, and a Civic Dinner.

Cllr Davey said: "I had a thoroughly enjoyable year as chairman and am honoured to have represented the council and the district.

"Uttlesford Community Travel and the Essex Air Ambulance do such fantastic work in the local area and I am delighted to have managed to raise money for them, as well as raise their profile, during my year in office."

Cllr Geoffrey Sell took over the chairman's chain from Cllr Davey at the council's annual meeting on 16 May. His nominated charities for 2017-18 are Support 4 Sight and the Essex Wildlife Trust.
