Communities Team volunteer at Bridge End Gardens

Bridge End Volunteers

Staff from Uttlesford District Council swapped the office for the pruning shears as they spent a day helping out at Bridge End Gardens in Saffron Walden.

Six members of the Communities Team became the first group of volunteers to take advantage of the council's employee volunteering scheme as they assisted Gardener in Charge, Mat Lester, and his team for the day. The volunteers rolled up their sleeves and got stuck into some weeding and clearing work around the maze at the popular attraction.

The event was organised by Volunteer Uttlesford through the Time Bank scheme.

Fiona Gardiner, the council's Communities Manager, said: "We were delighted to be able to spend some volunteering at the gardens and helping out Mat and his team. It was hard work but good fun, and a therapeutic experience too - outdoor tasks can be great for that, and the gardens offer a particularly stunning setting."

The Gardens are managed by Saffron Walden Town Council. Lisa Courtney, the Town Clerk, said: "We were delighted to receive and support officers from UDC in this excellent volunteering opportunity, and hope that we can support further Volunteer Uttlesford initiatives in future projects."
