Latest message from Cllr John Lodge, Leader of Uttlesford District Council - 23 July 2020
This week saw the end of what can only be described as the strangest school year most of us will have seen. I would like to thank all staff who have worked so admirably to keep children of key workers in school and provided work for all pupils to do at home. I think our schools and teachers have done a fantastic job in very difficult circumstances. With the summer holidays now upon us, visits to parks and our beautiful countryside will increase and whilst we want everyone to enjoy local services, please can I remind you to do so safely.
With the re-opening of gyms also happening this weekend, we are passing another milestone on the road to our economic recovery. Council officers are continuing to work with town and village centres to ensure social distancing and safety can be maintained. It is heart-warming to see the high level of support our local businesses are getting and I would encourage everyone to shop locally and shop safely.
From tomorrow (24 July), face coverings are required to be worn in shops and supermarkets. The evidence is clear that wearing face coverings in enclosed public spaces can reduce the risk of spreading the coronavirus, so I urge every resident to wear a mask to help us avoid a second wave, keep businesses open and ultimately save lives. Our local police community support officers have been visiting shops across the district to ensure staff are aware of the new rules. If you are not exempt from wearing a face covering you will be refused entry into a shop, so please ensure you have a mask in your bag or in your car so you don't get turned away.
