Arthur takes the Chair
Uttlesford District Council has announced its new Chair for the next 12 months.
Cllr Arthur Coote, who represents Saffron Walden Shire ward, was sworn in at the council's Annual Meeting on 18 May. He takes over the chain of office from Cllr Martin Foley, who served in 2020/21. Cllr Heather Asker, who represents Saffron Walden Castle ward, was announced as Vice-Chair for 2021/22.
Commenting on his new role, Cllr Coote, said: "It is a privilege to be able to serve this council as Chair. I am very much looking forward to it and will endeavour to oversee the business of the council in a fair, cordial and democratic manner. With meetings now starting to be held face to face again, this feels like a new beginning.
"I would like to thank Cllr Foley for all his hard work - in what was a very unusual year to be Chair, he did a fine job and I will always think of him as the 'Chair of the Zoom'."
Cllr Coote has chosen EACH (the East Anglia's Children's Hospice) as his good cause during his year in office, after he attended a Christmas Carol service at a local church whilst he was Mayor of Saffron Walden. The charity supports families and cares for children and young people with life-threatening conditions.
"The stories from parents, workers and supporters of EACH really moved me," said Cllr Coote. "As a parent, grandparent and having cared for sick children as a foster parent, this became a cause very dear to my heart. I hope to be able to raise as much money as possible for the charity."
