Salary: £92,854 - £96,094

This is a new post within the organisation, created to bring a distinct, professional focus to the development, inspection and adoption of the council's Local Plan. Planning issues large and small are vitally important to our residents, so we want a leader who is ambitious to deliver a top class development management function too. It's an ideal opportunity for an ambitious and capable planning professional to take the lead on our growth and development agenda and ensure that robust and high-quality advice supports decision-making on policy decisions that are immensely important to the district and its future.

The district is well-known as a highly desirable place to live and as a result, demand for housing is high. We're committed to ensuring that we do all we can to meet this demand, while ensuring that the right homes are being built, in the right places, with high quality design as a core requirement. Our Director of Planning will play the central role in facilitating the debate around what this looks like in practice and building consensus behind a strategic roadmap to its delivery.

There will also be a vital leadership role to play - evaluating current practice in Development Management function and embedding new ways of working that will enhance our performance in this key service.

You'll need to be a qualified Planner with significant management experience in your career to date - and you should be able to share examples of how you have advised and supported elected members on contentious issues, and how you have led cultural change and improvements to team performance. We expect that your experience to date will have included supporting a Local Plan through to adoption.

You'll understand that success in a role relies as much on your personal relationship building and communication skills as it does on your technical expertise. And it's vital that you can demonstrate an assured appreciation of the particular complexities of accommodating development and growth within a predominantly rural setting.

Uttlesford District Council is an inclusive employer and welcomes applications from all. We are proud to be a Disability Confident employer and guarantee an interview to anyone disclosing a disability whose application meets the minimum criteria for the post.
