Black History Month

Black History Month is celebrated each year in October in the UK. The aim is for local communities to challenge racism and educate themselves and others about black history.

Black History Month (BHM) is an annual celebration to honour the too-often unheralded accomplishments of Black Britons throughout our history.

BHM 2024

This year BHM UK has the theme of "Reclaiming Narratives".

Cherron Inko-Tariah MBE has called Reclaiming Narratives  "more than just a theme.

"It's an invitation. An invitation to every member of the Black community to take part in shaping how our stories are told. It's about ensuring that our voices are heard, our experiences acknowledged, and our contributions celebrated.

"This theme encourages us to shine a spotlight on the untold stories, the unsung heroes, and the everyday individuals who have made an indelible impact on our communities."

From our portfolio holder

Uttlesford District Council Portfolio for Housing and Equalities, Cllr Arthur Coote, said "I am delighted that as a council we can add our voice to raise awareness of Black History Month.  I urge all people of Uttlesford and beyond to use Black History Month to promote and celebrate Black contributions to British society, and to foster an understanding of Black history."

Interview with Kemi Badenoch

In 2021 The Rt Hon Kemi Badenoch, MP for North West Essex, talked about how Black History Month has become more prominent today than it was 25 years ago and how differently we talk about black history in the UK compared to Nigeria.

Black History Month Resource Pack 2024: 'Reclaiming Narratives"

The BHM team have put together an updated resource pack for 2024. The theme of "Reclaiming Narratives" marks a significant shift towards recognising and correcting the narratives of Black history and culture. By emphasising this theme, we shine a brighter light on stories, allegories, and histories that underscore our commitment to correcting historical inaccuracies and showcasing the untold success stories and the full complexity of Black heritage.
