Hackney Carriages (taxis)

Taxis (also known as Hackney Carriages) their drivers and operators, are licensed by the council to ensure public safety.

What is a Hackney Carriage?

Commonly called taxis, these vehicles generally all have an illuminated "TAXI" sign on the roof. They can be hailed in the street or they can be hired at any hackney carriage or approved rank in the District. The council controls the fares charges but does not limit the number of hackney carriages in the Uttlesford area.

Hackney carriages are the subject of strict licensing rules and regulations to ensure that they remain fit for the purpose. Regular mechanical safety checks are carried out and they are also subject to tests on their appearance and cleanliness. Public safety is paramount and only cars meeting the strict standards are licensed.
