Recycling at Christmas
Here's a list of common Christmas items and how you can dispose of them.
All recycling needs to be clean and dry before it is put into your green-lidded recycling bin or taken to your local recycling centre.
A quick guide to recycling at Christmas
Wrapping paper
Can it be recycled? - Depends
Wrapping paper can be recycled if it passes the 'scrunch' test - if it stays in a ball it can go in with the recycling; if it springs back into shape it needs to go in your grey-lidded bin.
Christmas cards
Can it be recycled? - Depends
Christmas cards covered in glitter cannot be recycled - put them in your grey-lidded bin Plain Christmas cards can be recycled - put them in your green-lidded bin.
Batteries
Can it be recycled? - Yes
Batteries are hazardous and can leak corrosive chemicals, so don't put them in your household waste bin or recycling bin. Take them to your local recycling centre for household waste. Alternatively some shops and local libraries have battery recycling boxes.
Sweet and biscuit tins
Can it be recycled? - Yes
Just make sure they're empty!
Advent calendars
Can it be recycled? - Yes
Just ensure all chocolate is removed!
Catalogues and magazines
Can it be recycled? - Yes
Remove any thin polythene wrap (please put this in your grey-lidded bin) from around the catalogue or magazine.
Glass bottles, jars and lids
Can it be recycled? - Yes
Make sure they're clean and dry.
Glass Christmas decorations
Can it be recycled? - No
Take to a charity shop for reuse or put them into your grey-lidded bin if they are broken.
Christmas lights
Can it be recycled? - Yes
These can be recycled at your local recycling centre for household waste.
Plastic Christmas trees
Can it be recycled? - No
Please take these to your recycling centre for household waste or donate them to a charity shop if they are in useable condition.
Kitchen foil
Can it be recycled? - Yes
We can recycle all foil - including turkey roasting trays, mince pie tins etc - as long as it's clean.
Unwanted toys
Can it be recycled? - No
Take these to a charity shop. If they are broken please put them in your grey-lidded bin.
Tinsel
Can it be recycled? - No
Put it in your grey-lidded bin.
Christmas crackers
Can it be recycled? - Yes
These can be recycled so long as they are not metallic or glittery.
Paper napkins and kitchen roll
Can it be recycled? - No
These usually have food waste on them - put them in your grey-lidded bin.
Food packaging
Can it be recycled? - Yes
Make sure there is no food left in the packaging and it is clean before putting into your green-lidded bin.
Electronics
Can it be recycled? - Yes
You can take devices such as mobile phones, tablets and games consoles to your local recycling centre for household waste.
Or drop off your unused cables and unwanted small electrical items for recycling in some of the special pink wheelie bins at locations across the district.
