The International Refugee Crisis

Information for members of the public in Uttlesford.

The council has great sympathy for refugees from the conflicts in Syria and elsewhere and is working closely with Essex County Council and other agencies to accommodate and support refugees who may be re-settled in Essex.

A package of suitable self-contained housing, school places, primary health care and other support is being pulled together in preparation for those refugees who may be referred to us by the Home Office for resettlement in Essex.

What you can do to help

The council has started to maintain a database of organisations and individuals who wish to offer help and services to refugees who may be re-settled in Uttlesford.

If you wish to be included in this database and receive further information from us, please email or telephone 01799 510510.

The council would particularly like to hear about offers of self-contained family housing. It has already used a recent private sector landlord forum meeting to start publicising this. Spare rooms or non-self-contained flats/houses are not considered suitable at this time. Please contact us at the above to submit your details of your offer.

General help and assistance

The council has already received approaches from residents and voluntary sector organisations who can offer experience of working with refugees, for example, teaching English as an additional language. If you would like to help in this or similar ways please contact us and we will put you in touch with our relevant local partner organisations.

Unaccompanied minors/children

If you feel that you help by fostering a refugee child, you may wish to apply to Essex County Council to become a foster parent. General information on fostering is available on the foster carers page at GOV.UK.
