Srebrenica Memorial Day - 11 July
On 11 July, the world will be paying tribute to the victims of the genocide and sending a clear message to future generations to say 'never again'.
On this day we share the memory of the Srebrenica genocide of July 1995. This was one of the most horrific events of the Bosnian War and the single largest mass murder on European soil since World War Two.
Cllr Louise Pepper, Portfolio holder for Environment and Green Issues, Equalities, said "It's important to be resolute in our commitment in tackling hatred, intolerance, prejudice, and discrimination in all forms and become a more united world because survivors of terrible atrocities carry a lifetime of pain and suffering."
What is Srebrenica Memorial Day
This year's Srebrenica Memorial Day takes place on 11 July) where communities across the UK will commemorate the 27th anniversary of the genocide, in which over 8,000 Bosnian Muslim men and boys were murdered, simply because of their faith.
2022 Theme: Combatting Denial Challenging Hatred
The theme for Srebrenica Memorial Day (SMD) 2022 is 'Combatting Denial Challenging Hatred'.
Described by the United Nations as the 'worst crime on European soil since the Second World War', the killings at Srebrenica have been classified as genocide by both the International Court of Justice and the International Criminal Tribunal of the former Yugoslavia.
Despite this unequivocal fact, denial of the Srebrenica genocide as well as the crimes against humanity committed across Bosnia and Herzegovina between 1992 to 1995 remains prevalent amongst individuals and institutions at the highest levels.
