Essex County Council Elections - Postponed

Essex County Council applied to the Government to postpone the elections due in May this year. This is a side-effect of Essex County Council (alongside Thurrock and Southend City Councils) applying to join the Governments 'Devolution Priority Programme' to introduce a directly-elected Mayor for Essex, to be elected in May 2026.

The planned elections will not now go ahead this May.

Our next elections will be held on Thursday 7 May 2026.

Further details will appear here in due course.

The Local Authorities (Changes to Years of Ordinary Elections) (England) Order 2025 will come into force on 4 March 2025.

The Order postpones elections to East Sussex, West Sussex, Essex, Hampshire, Isle of Wight, Norfolk, Suffolk, Surrey, and Thurrock, for one year and extends the terms of incumbent councillors accordingly.

You can find out more about the local government reorganisation on GOV.UK.
