Uttlesford Open 2023 art exhibition: Announcing the judges!
Saffron Walden Museum is delighted to announce that artists Heath Kane and Ian Wolter are its judges for this year's Uttlesford Open - the museum's first open-call art exhibition.
Ian and Heath will be selecting winners and highly commended works in the following categories:
Best response to the theme ' Sense of Place'
This could be a figurative representation of people, places or the landscape in any media, something more abstract or conceptual or even using places or the landscape as the source of your materials. Perhaps you weave baskets for found natural materials, make dyes from plants or use found objects in your work.
Best 2D
This could be a piece from a range of disciplines and media including but not limited to, printing, textiles, photography, drawing, collage, paintings, stained glass, mosaic and mixed media.
Best 3D
This could be a piece from a range of media and disciplines including but not limited to, ceramics, sculpture, wood carving, textiles, glass blowing, millinery, found objects, assemblages, basket weaving, willow weaving and straw animals.
Most Creative or Original artwork
Ian and Heath will be looking for creativity, unusual use of materials and technical skills in this category and art works can be in any media or discipline.
To be part of this exciting project in its maiden year, artists have until midnight on 20 May to submit digital images of their work. The museum welcomes submissions from across all artistic and creative disciplines.
All pieces will be seen by Ian and Heath and the aim is to display as many works as possible. Any works not selected will still be displayed digitally in the gallery space along with the artist's details.

The show will open to the public on Saturday 22 July and run until Sunday 29 October, with the private view on 21 July.
Heath Kane is an Australian artist, and local to Saffron Walden, with his studio and gallery located on Church Street.
He is synonymous with creating bold, striking, often lurid art. He embeds subtle, subversive themes that encourage a political or social conversation.
Heath's approach to art has always been driven by the practice of design thinking: combining his experience in commercial art with the origins of pop-art. He focuses on creating simple, iconic and memorable pieces that have a strong narrative.
Heath has collaborated with Stella Artois, Wired Magazine and Saatchi Gallery, and was commissioned by Penguin Books to create the last published covers of George Orwell's most famous books. Heath exhibits his work in solo shows all around the globe, and his originals and prints frequently appear in leading galleries worldwide. This year his work will feature prominently at Glastonbury music festival.
Ian Wolter is an award-winning artist and sculptor.
Ian's public works include Safe Haven, the memorial to the Kinder Transport in Harwich, The Children of Calais here in Saffron Walden, which highlights children caught up in the refugee crisis, and bronze busts of Eglantyne Jebb, founder of Save the Children (Lady Margaret Hall, Oxford University) and Krystyna Skarbek, Britain's first female special agent of WW2 (Ognisko, the Polish Club, London).
A graduate of the Cambridge School of Art, he is the recipient of the British Sustainability Art Prize, and the Italian Arte Laguna Prize and RomArt Sculpture Prize.
