Essex Green Infrastructure Standards
Green Infrastructure Standards are a key component of the Green Infrastructure Framework. They define what good green infrastructure looks like for local communities.
There are 9 GI standards that have been developed to support policy making and design of new developments, with the aim to create great places for people and wildlife to thrive in Essex.
About green infrastructure
Green infrastructure (GI) is our diverse network of green and blue spaces that include our natural assets, wildlife habitats and environmental features. GI includes:
- parks and gardens
- amenity greenspace
- natural and semi-natural urban greenspaces
- green corridors
- water (coast, rivers, lakes and ponds)
- other public spaces such as allotments and city farms
Green infrastructure provides an opportunity to link with Biodiversity Net Gain, Local Nature Recovery Strategies, Nature Recovery Network, and Natural Capital.

Essex GI standards
The 9 GI principles and corresponding standards will help deliver better greener places across Essex placemaking and place-keeping.
You can find information on the Essex GI principles and standards on the Essex Design Guide website. There are also 2 guidance documents:
- Essex Green Infrastructure Standards Non-Technical Guidance - useful for community groups and parish councils
- Essex Green Infrastructure Standards Technical Guidance - for developers and planning professionals

National GI Framework
The Green Infrastructure (GI) Framework is a commitment in the government's 25 Year Environment Plan. It supports the greening of our towns and cities and connections with the surrounding landscape.
Natural England has set up a GI Framework web portal. This includes the Beta Green Infrastructure Mapping Tool which provides a baseline of GI across England.
