New group needed to take on BMX track

Uttlesford District Council would like to know if a community group would like to take on the responsibility for the BMX facility in Saffron Walden.

The council took on the lease of the wooded area, known locally as 'Hilly Bumps', at Claypits Plantation near Herbert's Farm Playing Fields in 1993, and in 2010 reached agreement with the landowners, Audley End Estates, to allow a group of BMX riders to formalise the unofficial track they had developed.

Since then the group has maintained the ramps and jumps - some of which are in excess of two metres high - and carried out the necessary Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) daily checks.

The group have now reduced in numbers and have decided to end their involvement.

The BMX facility is currently out of use while its future is decided, and signage notifying the public has been put in place.

If a new community group does not come forward to manage the facility, the area will be re-profiled and returned to woodland.

Interested local groups have until 4pm on Friday 16 February to express an interest. Please email uconnect@uttlesford.gov.uk.
