Prevent counter-terrorism strategy
The Prevent counter-terrorism strategy is part of the national counter-terrorism initiative.
- responding to the ideological challenge of terrorism and the threat from those who promote it
- preventing people from being drawn into terrorism and make sure that they're given appropriate advice and support
- working with sectors and institutions where there are risks of radicalisation that we need to address
Prevent films offering advice on how you can get help
Two new short animated films about the Prevent strategy are now available.
Each film provides an introduction to Prevent and to the work of Prevent officers. They offer advice on how to get help and what to do if you think someone close to you is at risk from radicalisation.

Run Hide Tell
Incidents in the UK and around the world remind us all of the terrorist threat we face, which in the UK is considered as 'SUBSTANTIAL', meaning an attack is likely. Police and security agencies are working tirelessly to protect the public but it is also important that communities remain vigilant and aware of how to protect themselves if the need arises.
The government has produced a Run Hide Tell campaign. This offers advice for the public on the steps they can take to keep themselves safe in the rare event of a firearms or weapons attack.
Unattended items
If you see an unattended item:
- do not touch
- try and identify an owner in the immediate area
- if you still think it's suspicious, don't feel embarrassed or think anybody else will report it
- report it to a member of staff, security, or if they are not available dial 999 (do not use your mobile phone in the immediate vicinity)
- move away to a safe distance - Even for a small item such as a briefcase move at least 100m away from the item starting from the centre and moving out
The government has produced some guidance on what to do if you find and unattended item.
Prevent in Uttlesford
By adopting a multi-agency approach to protecting and supporting people at risk from radicalisation Uttlesford District Council aims to safeguard children and adults from being drawn into terrorist-related activity and promote community relations.
