Big Garden Birdwatch 2023

Results of the Big Garden Birdwatch 2023

The RSPB's Big Garden Birdwatch asks members of the public to spend one hour tracking the birds they see in their gardens.

Since the Birdwatch began in 1979, more than 137 million birds have been counted across the UK, with avid birdwatchers spending 9 million hours recording their garden birds. The conservation charity says this has helped provide valuable insight on how species are faring.

The annual RSPB Big Garden Birdwatch took place on 27 to 29 January 2023.

Summary of results

House Sparrows are celebrating their 20th year as the number one bird spotted in UK gardens, but bird declines since the survey began are "startling" with 22 million House Sparrows alone lost from UK skies since 1966.
