Housing and grant support for refugees

Uttlesford District Council has a new housing support package available for Ukrainian refugees living in the district.

The offer, which is open to those who are eligible under the government's Homes for Ukraine Scheme, will allow for the continued accommodation of guests in private rental properties. It includes a deposit and six weeks' rent in advance, as well as a guarantee to cover the rent if the tenant is unable to do so.

As part of the package of support, the council has set up a dedicated fund to help top up rent where it is not fully met by housing allowance.

Cllr Maggie Sutton, Portfolio Holder for Communities, said: "We carried out extensive engagement with local landlords, hosts and refugee families last year and housing emerged as a priority, specifically moving into private sector housing from host accommodation. This new housing support package will greatly assist those who wish to continue forging meaningful new lives in our district. The additional services we are providing allow us to expand on our existing support, offering many families to settle and flourish here."

The council has also extended the Individual Support Grant to all asylum seekers in Uttlesford. It was previously only open to Ukrainian refugees but is now available to asylum seekers who have been granted indefinite leave to remain and are staying in specific accommodation. The grant can be used for moving costs and towards the purchase of essential household items to furnish accommodation, up to a maximum of £1,500 per family.

More information on both support packages is available on the council's website: www.uttlesford.gov.uk/refugee-support
