Fresh new look for Walden Place

Uttlesford District Council has officially unveiled its new-look sheltered accommodation scheme at Walden Place.

The Saffron Walden venue has undergone an 18-month redevelopment.

The focus of the project has been to separate the grade-II listed Georgian house from the sheltered housing flats and to provide much-improved communal facilities for the tenants, as well as two new flats. The main house will be sold as a private sale and the funds will help to pay for the redevelopment works.

The tenants are delighted with their new facilities.

One tenant, Lynn Hardcastle, said: "The re-opening of the new part of Walden Place is what we all needed and have thoroughly enjoyed it. It's a great place to gather and spend time." Another, Chris Johnson, described the new-look site as a "paradise" in Saffron Walden.

Cllr Arthur Coote, Portfolio Holder for Housing, said: "We are pleased to complete this much-needed redevelopment at Walden Place. It has breathed new life into the scheme and I know the tenants greatly appreciate the new and modern facilities."

Walden Place is one of 11 sheltered accommodation schemes run by the council. The schemes are for people over the age of 60 who need the additional support of living in a friendly and secure community environment whilst still having their own front door, privacy and independence.
