Sub-station noise level reduction work starts at Mortimer's Gate
Work to reduce the noise impacts of an electricity sub-station at Mortimer's Gate housing development is underway.
The work will take a number of months but when complete will bring an improved outcome for residents.
The homes at the development on Ashdon Road, Saffron Walden, were completed in 2019 and were constructed around a pre-existing industrial sub-station. The existing wooden acoustic fence surrounding the sub-station is not substantial enough to mitigate the noise levels from it.
Uttlesford District Council has been working with UK Power Networks to find the most suitable way to reduce the noise levels further. UK Power Networks started preparation work on site last week.
The first step will be to lay the foundation for a purpose-built acoustic enclosure - a metal-framed acoustic structure that will be installed around the transformer. This should be delivered in September, and it is expected the work will be complete in October.
Whilst the structure will not eliminate the noise completely, the appointed consultants have a great deal of experience in the design and installation of acoustic enclosures, and the council is satisfied that addressing the noise at its source will provide the greatest reduction in sound.
Cllr Petrina Lees, Leader of Uttlesford District Council, said: "We have worked closely with UK Power Networks to ensure this important work is done without delay and that, when complete, it will noticeably reduce the noise impacts from the sub-station.
"I'm also pleased to say that we are in the final stages in securing an agreement with Bloor Homes who have committed to making a substantial contribution to the cost of the works."
