Where your Council Tax goes
What happens to the Council Tax we collect and how it is spent by us.
Council Tax is calculated using the precept levels set for funds required by Essex County Council, Essex Police, Fire and Crime Commissioner Fire and Rescue Authority and the individual town and parish councils together with the Council Tax requirement set by Uttlesford District Council.
How Council Tax is shared
Uttlesford District Council keeps just under 8 pence in every pound of the Council Tax we collect.
Every £1 of your Council Tax is shared in the following way:
- Essex County Council - 71p
- Police, Fire & Crime Commissioner (Policing and Community Safety) - 12p
- Uttlesford District Council - 8p
- Average town or parish council share - 4p
- Police, Fire & Crime Commissioner (Fire and Rescue Authority) - 4p

Spending
Our annual budget lays out how much we plan to spend on each of our main services (net of fees and charges).
We collect some of this money through Council Tax, but we have other sources of income including that from:
- Localised Business Rates Retention
- New Homes Bonus
- Rural Services Delivery Grant
- investments
Our budget for 2024/25 explains how much we plan to spend on each of our main services and where we get our income.
