Uttlesford District Council adopts new Waste Strategy for Essex

30-year strategy sets out how to reduce impact on environment from things we throw away

Uttlesford District Council has adopted the new Waste Strategy for Essex.

The strategy is an ambitious plan for managing recycling and waste in the county for the next 30 years. It sets out how the Essex Waste Partnership will work together to reduce the impact on our environment from dealing with the things we throw away.

The strategy will help ensure residents can reuse and recycle more, while keeping costs down and protecting the environment.

Essex County Council hosted a 10-week public consultation on behalf of the Partnership last year. Over 4,500 people had their say on the draft strategy, and their feedback was used to develop a final version.

Uttlesford officially adopted the new Waste Strategy for Essex at a meeting on 16 July.

Cllr Neil Reeve, Portfolio Holder for Environment and Climate Change, said: "This is an important strategy as it will shape the way we move to a more sustainable future by reducing the things that we throw away - I'm delighted Uttlesford is the first council to adopt it. I am particularly pleased with the target to stop using landfill by 2030.

"We must do much more to protect our environment and by working together across the county we can make better use of the resources we have. We are planning a series of messages about reducing, reusing and recycling throughout the late summer and autumn."

Cllr Peter Schwier, Chairman of the Essex Waste Partnership, said: "We're pleased that Uttlesford District Council has formally adopted the Waste Strategy for Essex. The other councils in the partnership will be taking decisions on adopting the strategy throughout the summer.

"The vision of the strategy is to rethink waste - by everyone working together, we will reduce waste and reuse and recycle more. This will protect the environment and save resources."
