Rediscover the joy of cycling this summer
Use the 'try before you buy' long-term bike loan scheme
Did you know that you can hire an e-bike, pedal bike or e-cargo bike on a long-term loan in and around Saffron Walden?
The initiative is part of the series of bike hire offers recently launched by Uttlesford District Council to help get the town cycling.
Anyone who lives, works or studies in the town can rent a bike for up to six months at a subsidised rate. The scheme is ideal for anyone who would like to try a bike before they buy it - just like Wicken Bonhunt resident Claire who has had an e-bike on loan for the past few months.
"Riding an e-bike is just like riding a pedal bike, but you stop worrying about the hills. No more wobbles when you reach your limit on the uphill bits, you turn up the 'power' and away you go," said Claire.
"The bike was delivered to me at home. I was shown how to use the integral lock, how the gears worked and the recharging point - all very simple really. It took a few days before I decided to take it out, and now I use it every day.
"I have found my e-bike to be a practical alternative to a car. I do regular short trips on the e-bike every day, sometimes several times a day. I was a reluctant cyclist, but now I love it. I am planning some longer rides and am looking forward to new 'greener' adventures.
"I'm a convert and will look at pricing and what to buy, but for now I like the hire scheme and the 'try before you buy' ethic."
How it works
Visit the Saffron Walden Bike Club website via www.uttlesford.gov.uk/EV-bikes-hire-or-try-before-you-buy and choose the type of bike you would like.
You can choose how long you want to try the bike for, your delivery time and date, and how you want to pay.
Get your 'Pedal Perks'
Days out by cycling can be a lot cheaper in and around Saffron Walden this summer.
Hop on one of the hire bikes and benefit from a range of deals and discounts at various tourist attractions, cafes, restaurants and shops, or ride your own bike and pick up the same perks. Simply show your cycling helmet at the point of purchase to redeem the offer.
