Winter fuel payment scam
Be on your guard for scam text and WhatsApp messages claiming to be from the government about the winter fuel scheme.
We have had reports of our residents being contacted through WhatsApp and text messages by individuals claiming to be from the government, they are in fact criminals trying to hack their bank accounts.
The scam texts claims a new living allowance will be paid out, which will replace the winter fuel allowance. A link is provided asking victims to update their details to claim the allowance but the message is not legitimate.
The government, or the council, do not send out text messages asking people to click on links to make a claim for anything. Those eligible for the winter fuel payment will be paid automatically, or through being accepted for a new claim for pension credit, which then makes you eligible.
