A stellar celebration of the night sky

Saffron Walden Museum presents "Space Night" with Thaxted Astronomical Society

Saffron Walden Museum is excited to invite space enthusiasts, curious minds and families alike to "Space Night", an extraordinary event held in collaboration with Thaxted Astronomical Society.

This immersive evening - on Saturday 1 February, 6pm to 9pm - promises to spark curiosity about the wonders of the night sky with a wide range of activities designed to captivate all ages.

Event highlights

1.    Special exhibition: We Choose to Go to the Moon

Step into the story of humanity's enduring fascination with the cosmos. The exhibition begins with a captivating display of space rocks, including lunar and Martian samples, and meteorites, providing a tangible connection to the universe. Discover the stories of animals that have ventured into space, including the two tortoises that were the first creatures to orbit the moon.

The exhibit also features a facsimile of the Apollo 11 flight plan - the historic 1969 mission that brought astronauts to the moon - alongside a video installation created by Simon Hilton-Smith, Museum Collections Assistant. The video blends original NASA footage with personal memories shared by the public, from local residents to participants in Papua New Guinea.

We Choose to Go to the Moon delves into the cultural history of space exploration, from the first telescopes to science fiction, religious symbolism, and even music, film, and design. Fascinating objects from the museum's human history collections, alongside items generously loaned by the public and community partners, bring this rich history to life.

For an extra cosmic adventure, visitors can explore the night sky through a mini planetarium and immerse themselves in the interactive Infinity Rocket with an accompanying space soundscape.

This exhibition is made possible through the generous support of The Gibson Walden Fund, Saffron Walden Community Shed, Thaxted Astronomical Society, North Essex Astronomical Society, Gerald Lucy of The Rock Gallery, and contributions from local residents.

2.    Star-gazing with Thaxted Astronomical Society

Experience the night sky through the lenses of Thaxted Astronomical Society's telescopes. Whether you're a budding astronomer or just curious, this is a fantastic opportunity to see celestial wonders up close (weather permitting). The society's members will also be on hand to discuss their work and how you can get involved.

3.    Pop-up space displays and activities

For one night only, Thaxted Astronomical Society will host an engaging pop-up exhibition at the museum. Highlights include a working orrery, hands-on activities exploring mass and gravity, and informative displays about the night sky.

4.    Space trail

Embark on a journey through the cosmos with our Space Trail. Solve clues hidden around the Museum and earn a special intergalactic explorer sticker!

5.    Space-themed activities for young astronauts

Bring the little ones along for a series of space-themed activities, including colouring pages, an "I Spy" sheet, word searches, and even a chance to dress up!

Join us for a night of discovery and wonder as we celebrate the infinite possibilities of space. Whether you're looking to learn, explore, or just have fun, Space Night at Saffron Walden Museum is an event not to be missed!

Activities on the night are free but normal museum admission fees apply.
