Museum celebrates 190th birthday with showcase of wonders and grand bash

This year, Saffron Walden Museum celebrates its 190th birthday.

Since opening on 12 May 1835, within a purpose-built facility, the museum has become one of the oldest of its kind in the country. Focused initially on Natural History and World Cultures, the museum has flourished and expanded - from the intricate tales of agriculture to the vibrant narratives of cultural heritage, from the elegance of wood to the allure of gold. The museum is a treasure trove filled with wonders from across the globe.

To commemorate this milestone, the museum invites the local community, along with community groups, academics and experts, to select their own 'wonder' for the upcoming exhibition - Wonder: 190 years of the Saffron Walden Museum.

This birthday exhibition, which opens on 10 May, reveals the fascinating history of both the museum and the art of collecting.

And that's not all!

In a captivating celebration of history, the museum will commemorate the launch of the exhibition with the remarkable revival of an 1836 printing press. Once the heart of Harts Printers - whose legacy continues with Harts Books and Harts Yard - this press will now serve as a vibrant platform for creativity, bringing to life tote bags designed by competition winners. The competition begins on 24 February and runs through March and April.

Simon Hilton-Smith, collections assistant, said: "We invite the public to unleash their creativity and sketch their favourite museum wonder. The winners will have the chance to create and print their designs at the museum. Don't miss the opportunity to showcase your imagination and be part of something extraordinary."
