Abandoned vehicles on the highway or privately owned land
We have a statutory duty to deal with vehicles that are alleged to be abandoned. Vehicles can be classed as abandoned on the highway, land owned by Uttlesford District Council or privately owned land.
If a vehicle appears to have been abandoned on private land, or a privately owned car park then the process for removal can only be commenced once written instructions have been received from the land owner or land owner's agent.
Abandoning a motor vehicle is a summary offence Section 2 Refuse Disposal (Amenity) for which the penalty can be up to £2,500 and/or three months imprisonment.
