A Taste of History at Saffron Walden Museum

Discover the surprising history of salads

Join cook and food historian Monica Askay at Saffron Walden Museum on 13 June to learn about and salads of the past and be inspired to create your own 'historical salad' at home!

This demonstration and tasting, which complements the museum's current exhibition Feeding the Family, will look at salads from medieval times to the 18th century, with their colourful and sometimes surprising ingredients.

Participants will be able to see three different salads assembled and compare their different tastes. Copies of historical salad recipes from different periods will be provided for participants to take home.

"It is fascinating to see how salads have developed through the ages," said Monica Askay. "The range and combination of ingredients are truly inspiring."

The demonstration and tasting will be on Tuesday 13 June from 2.30pm to 4.30pm, and soft drinks will be provided to accompany the tasting. There are places for 15 adults at a cost £40 per person, so early booking online is advised via the museum's Art Tickets webpage: https://saffron-walden-museum.arttickets.org.uk/.

The ticket includes free admission to the museum from 1.30pm on the day. Participants must be 18 or over. If you have any questions about potential allergens, please contact the museum on museum@uttlesford.gov.uk or 01799 510333.
