Honour for long-serving former councillors

Four former Uttlesford district councillors have been given honorary status in recognition of their distinguished public service.

Christina Cant and Elizabeth Godwin were made Honorary Alderwomen and David Morson an Honorary Alderman. They received certificates at a meeting of Council on Tuesday (18 July). Unable to attend the meeting but also made an Honorary Alderwoman was former councillor Jackie Cheetham.

Christina was elected on to the council in 1997 and was a member until 2015. During that time, she held several high-profile roles including Chair of the Development Control Committee from 2004 to 2007, and Chair of the Council in 2012/13.

Jackie was a district councillor for 24 years having been elected in 1991. She took on many and varied roles within the authority including Chair of the Stansted Airport Advisory Panel from 2012 to 2015, and Chair of the Planning & Development Committee (1995 to 2001)/Development Control Committee (2007 to 2012)/Planning Committee (2012 to 2015). Jackie also held the role of Deputy Leader from 2007 to 2014.

Elizabeth was elected in 2000 and was a member until 2015. She held the position of Chair of the Council in 2004/5, Vice-Chair of the Development Control Committee from 2007 to 2011, and was Chair of Scrutiny Committee from 2011 to 2015.

David was elected in 1995 and served for 20 years. He was Deputy Leader from 2005 to 2007 and held a number of positions including Chair of Scrutiny Committee from 2001 to 2003.

Cllr Geof Driscoll, Chair of the Council for 2023/24, said: "I'm delighted that we can celebrate and thank Christina, Jackie, Elizabeth and David for their tireless public service - their dedication and commitment is a great example to us all.

"They all made significant contributions to the council and the community over many years, and they thoroughly deserve this honour."

The honorary status means Christina, Jackie, Elizbabeth and David may attend and take part in future civic occasions.
