Doorstep electoral registration canvassing to start

Canvassers will be out and about in the district from this weekend to obtain responses from households that have not replied to this year's election canvass.

In the summer Uttlesford District Council sent forms to every household in the district as part of the annual update to the register of electors. This ensures that everyone who is entitled is registered to vote to have their say in all elections and referendums.

Only 5 per cent of households did not respond and these can now expect a visit from one of the council's canvassers.

The canvassers will carry identification and will ask a series of simple questions.  They will not enter homes, and they will not ask for personal details like national insurance numbers or bank details.

They will have a form to leave and may ask for confirmation that all the details they have are correct. If the canvassers get no reply, they will leave a calling card.

Those who do not respond risk being removed from the electoral register and will not be able to vote. This can also affect that person's credit rating.
