Uttlesford at 50

On 1 April 2024, we celebrated the 50th anniversary of the formation of Uttlesford District Council created under the Local Government Act 1972.

Uttlesford turns 50: marking a milestone for local government

The Local Government Act 1972 brought about the introduction of the two-tier system we have today and reduced the number of councils from 1,245 to 412.

Uttlesford was one of the councils formed on 1 April 1974. Now, 50 years on, the anniversary is an opportunity to celebrate all that we do, recognise and highlight the important contribution we make to our community, and showcase the value of local government.

It's also an opportunity to focus on the people - leaders, councillors and officers - who have served our local residents over the last half century.
