Empty homes
Help with bringing empty homes back in to use including how to tell us about an empty property, advice on the support and loans available and when we might take enforcement action.
We want to improve access to decent affordable housing by encouraging and supporting the owners of long term empty homes to bring these properties back into occupation.
Tell us about an empty home
Tell us if you own or know about an empty property and want to do something about it.
Get funding
You can apply for an interest-free loan of up to £175,000 through the Private Lease Agreements Converting Empties (PLACE) scheme to:
- renovate an empty dwelling
- convert an empty property into one or more units
All work must be done to the government's Decent Homes Standard.
Enforcement action
We will consider taking enforcement action if:
- you are a property owner who persists in leaving a property empty
- there is a danger to public safety, or
- an empty property is seriously overgrown or dilapidated
This may include the use of Compulsory Purchase or Empty Dwelling Management Orders.
