Ending a council tenancy
If you want to terminate your tenancy you must notify us as soon as possible.
When you want to end your tenancy you will need to let us know in writing at least 4 weeks in advance. The date your tenancy ends must be a Sunday..
⚠ If you don't tell us, you may still have to pay rent even if you are no longer living in the property.
End a tenancy
When you want to end your tenancy you will need to download and print a Notice to Terminate Tenancy form (PDF, 229 KB).
Please return your completed form to Housing Services at:
Council Offices
London Road
Saffron Walden
CB11 4ER
Then you will need to:
- If you are on benefits, tell our Council Tax and Housing Benefit teams that you are moving.
- Make sure your rent account is all paid by the end of your tenancy.
- Let your gas, electricity and water suppliers know that you are moving out.
- Make sure that all of your belongings have been removed from the property and garden.
- Return all keys to us by midday on the Monday immediately following the date of the end of your tenancy.
You are still responsible for paying rent and following the terms of your Conditions of Tenancy (PDF, 548 KB) until the date your tenancy ends.
Ending a tenancy for someone else
There must be exceptional circumstances for us to be able to accept a notice to terminate a tenancy on the tenant's behalf.
These include:
- if the only named tenant at the property has died
- if the named tenant has moved to new accommodation for the foreseeable future, for example if they have moved into residential care
We may ask you for legal documents such as a death certificate, or proof of Power of Attorney if applicable.
You will need to download and complete the additional section of the Notice to Terminate Tenancy form (PDF, 229 KB).
